More Hell On Earth-Greystone

Over a year ago, I posted a pictorial piece on Trenton Psychiatric Hospital. SInce then the site has added photos of Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital otherwise known as New Jersey State Lunatic Asylum at Morristown (NJ). They are taken from the site Forgotten Photography. Greystone was closed down a few years ago thanks to Governor Codey, some of the buildings have been demolished, others lie in disrepair at the moment, waiting for the state to either declare them as historical landmarks or total them.

Take a look at these pictures. They are worth a thousand words.

It is interesting to note that in it's histories, Greystone did lobotomies among other "therapies".

One of the hospitals I was taken to in March should be amongst these ruins. It was so poorly run that I thought I was going to be assaulted/raped. They also left me alone in my room overnight with shoelaces, tweezers, etc. Not great.

Wishing you well,
NOS

I need to read up more on it's history, but what I can say is that there are some state psychiatric hospitals in South Africa that are better run AND safer than the place I saw in the US. Of course there are others here that need to be burned to the ground. I should also mention that there are some great hospitals in US, who work miricales- who just need to be able to afford them.

Thanks Susan for posting this x

@Nos, I am sorry for what you experienced. You know you aren't alone in that, right? I really should write about my last visit in detail, the things that went on should not be swept under the rug.
Thanks again for reminding me.

@Bunker, I am your protege. I;m humbled, truly.

@Fellow OCD Sufferer, yeah, I know. Wow.

@Stephi, try to see if you can get a copy of ":Mad In America" by Whitaker. It has a nice history of hospitals in the US. You are right about the good places, But we have to know about the bad ones so they never happen again

Those pictures make my skin crawl and my heart break. When you institutionalize someone, you aren't putting them in prison, you're supposed to be getting them help.

In Wikipedia it says this hospital was opened in 1876. Kinda makes you wonder if the "evil vibe" emitted by it could have been responsible for some of the Jersey Devil sightings.

After breakfast with two years ago S and I visited his aunt in order to learn some family history.

His grandmother had a lobotomy at Greystone in 1950. It returned her to a high level of functioning for several months but she utimately died from complications.

My father was hospitalized there ca 1940 but I don't know any details.

I hope that the buildings are renovated and made into something that is light and beautiful. I wonder at the stories those walls could tell.
